Luis Ledesma, Baritone
Luis Ledesma is an established international singer with powerful, yet refined vocal and theatrical gifts. Born in Mexico City, his career advanced in Europe and in the United States after a young artist residency at The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and winning several competitions, including the Pavarotti International Voice Competition and Julian Gayarre Competition in Spain. This season, Mr. Ledesma will make his role début as Alvaro in Florencia en el Amazonas with New York City Opera, perform Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera San Antonio, and reprise the role of Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Palm Beach Opera.
His career already includes appearances in several international opera houses. Some notable international engagements include roles such as Alphonse in La favorite and Riccardo in I puritani with Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona; Marcello in La bohème with Gran Teatre del Liceu, Semperoper Dresden, and Teatro Nacional de São Carlos; Escamillo in Carmen with Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Ópera de Bellas Artes in Mexico, Oper Graz, and Savonlinna Opera Festival; Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Festival Internacional de Música de Macau; Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with Savonlinna Opera Festival; Tonio in Pagliacci and Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana with Hungarian State Opera in Budapest; and productions of Luisa Fernanda with Teatro alla Scala and Leoncavallo’s La bohème with Festival KlangBogen Wein in Austria.
North American engagements include the title role in Macbeth and the role of Marcello in La bohème with Palm Beach Opera; Scarpia in Tosca with Atlanta Opera, Arizona Opera, Nashville Opera, and Opera Santa Barbara; Tonio in Pagliacci for Opera Lyra Ottawa and Michigan Opera Theatre; Escamillo in Carmen for Arizona Opera, Manitoba Opera, and The Orlando Philharmonic; Gerard in Andrea Chenier for Nashville Opera; Valentin in Faust for Hawaii Opera, Opera Naples, and Fresno Grand Opera; the title role of Rigolettofor Florentine Opera; Jack Rance in La fanciulla del west with Opéra de Montréal; Germont in La traviata with Florida Grand Opera and Michigan Opera Theatre; and created the role of Augustino in the world première of Pepe Martinez’ newly commissioned mariachi opera El Pasado nunca se termina with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and San Diego Opera.
As a concert artist, Mr. Ledesma performs a variety of orchestral repertoire and at a variety of esteemed concert venues. After making his début with Carnegie Hall with a performance of Fauré’s Requiem, he performed Dvořák’s Te Deum. Other concert engagements include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Guadalajara Symphony in Oviedo, Spain; Orff’s Carmina Burana with Louisville Orchestra; Mozart’s Coronation Mass; and a series of Christmas concerts in Hannover with The NDR Radiophilharmonie in addition to a Verdi gala concert held at Alte Oper Frankfurt. Mr. Ledesma also sang two tours with Andrea Bocelli, performing in famous venues such as Madison Square Garden, Hollywood Bowl, Hard Rock Café in Hollywood, Florida, and the Auditorio Nacional Mexico City.
