Kian Freitas - Don Fernando | New Amsterdam Opera
Kian Freitas, Don Fernando

Hailed as “excellent”, with a voice that “soars easily over the orchestra”, Bass-baritone Kian Freitas is gaining acclaim for his powerful and expressive voice, commanding stage presence and insightful interpretations both on the stage and in concert at such spaces as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space and Merkin Hall. As Grandpa Moss in The Tender Land at Opera North, Mr. Freitas was “in strong voice” and “appropriately dark and menacing”.

Mr. Freitas has been heard as Ferrando in Il Trovatore, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Angelotti in Tosca, Schaunard in La bohème, both Figaro and Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Escamillo in Carmen, and Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. Other recent engagements include Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Monterone in Rigoletto, Lo Bonzo in Madama Butterfly, and Masetto in Don Giovanni. Mr. Freitas created the role of Stefano in the world premiere of La Tempesta, an operatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest presented in Italy.

As a concert soloist, Mr. Freitas has sung Handel’s Messiah and Simeon in Debussy’s L’Enfant Prodigue with the Metro Chamber Orchestra, arias from Aleko and Prince Igor with the Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem in Oyster Bay, and Mozart’s Requiem at Dartmouth College.
